Yard Sale Tips That Actually Work

Whether it's your first sale or your fiftieth, these proven tips will help you attract more buyers and make more money.

1. Pick the Right Date

Saturday mornings are prime time. Avoid holiday weekends when people are traveling. Spring and early fall get the most foot traffic.

2. Price Everything

Sticker every single item. Shoppers skip things without prices. Use round numbers — $1, $5, $10 — and be ready to negotiate.

3. Take Great Photos

Good photos sell listings. Shoot in natural light, show your best items up close, and take a wide shot of your full setup.

4. Make Signs That Pop

Big, bold letters on bright poster board. Include your address and an arrow. Place signs at major intersections within a mile.

5. Display Like a Store

Use tables — not the ground. Group similar items together. Hang clothing on a rack. Make it easy to browse and touch.

6. Start Early, End on Time

Serious buyers show up at 7–8 AM. Post your start time and stick to it. Plan to wrap up by early afternoon.

7. Have Change Ready

Start with at least $50 in small bills and coins. Consider accepting Venmo or Cash App for bigger items.

8. Promote Online

Post your sale on YardShoppers, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Nextdoor. The more places, the more buyers.

9. Drop Prices After Noon

Cut prices by 50% after lunch. Your goal is to sell everything — not take it back inside. Consider a 'fill a bag for $5' deal.

10. Donate What's Left

Schedule a donation pickup for the same afternoon. Goodwill, Salvation Army, and local charities will often come to you.
